FAQs
What services does Crossing the Threshold offer?
We offer a range of personalized recovery and mental health services including individual addiction counselling, recovery coaching, sober coaching, life coaching, case management, family education, group therapy, group outings, and long-term ongoing recovery support. Our goal is to meet you where you are and build a path forward that works for your life.
What types of addiction do you help with?
We work with a wide range of addictions including alcohol, opioids, stimulants, and other substances, as well as gambling and behavioural addictions. If you're unsure whether what you're experiencing qualifies as addiction, we encourage you to reach out — that conversation itself is often the first step.
What is the difference between addiction counselling and recovery coaching?
Addiction counselling focuses on the clinical and therapeutic dimensions of addiction — exploring underlying causes, trauma, mental health, and building coping strategies. Recovery coaching is more action-oriented and future-focused: it helps you set goals, stay accountable, navigate daily life sober, and build the kind of life that makes recovery sustainable. Many clients benefit from both. We'll help you figure out what's right for you.
What is sober coaching?
A sober coach provides real-world, day-to-day support outside of a clinical setting. They may accompany you to social events, help you navigate high-risk situations, or simply be a consistent, trusted presence during the early stages of recovery when cravings and triggers are strongest.
Do you offer support for families?
Yes. Addiction affects entire families — not just the individual. We offer family education, guidance on how to communicate and set boundaries, and ongoing support so families can heal alongside their loved one. You don't have to figure this out alone.
How do I get started with Crossing the Threshold?
Simply reach out for a free consultation. We'll take the time to understand your situation, answer your questions, and help you figure out the best next step — whether that's counselling, coaching, or another form of support. There's no pressure and no commitment required.

What happens during the first session?
The first session is an opportunity for us to get to know you and for you to get to know us. We'll ask about your history, your goals, and what hasn't worked in the past. Think of it as a deep-dive conversation — we dig in at a fundamental level so we can build a plan that actually fits your life.
How long are sessions?
Individual sessions typically run 1 to 2 hours, depending on the type of service and your needs.
Do I need to have already tried treatment to work with you?
Not at all. We provide support before, during, and after formal treatment. Many clients come to us as their first step into recovery; others come after completing a treatment program and need ongoing support to maintain and build on their progress.
Do you accept insurance?
Yes, we can bill many insurance providers. Contact us, and we can confirm whether your coverage applies to our services.
Where are you located and what areas do you serve?
We are based in Vancouver, British Columbia, and serve clients throughout the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley regions. We are willing to travel to meet clients where they are.
Do you offer in-person and virtual sessions?
Please contact us directly for the most current information on in-person and virtual availability. We work hard to be accessible to clients across the region.
Do you offer group programs?
Yes. In addition to individual services, we run group therapy sessions, group outings, and peer support meetings. These can be a powerful complement to one-on-one work.
Who are the founders of Crossing the Threshold?
Crossing the Threshold was founded by Kevin and Joey, both of whom are in recovery themselves. Their lived experience isn't just background — it's central to how they show up for every client. Kevin holds the MPCC (Master Practitioner in Clinical Counselling) designation, bringing formal clinical expertise alongside that personal understanding.
What makes Crossing the Threshold different from other recovery services?
We take a highly personalized approach that respects that recovery looks different for everyone — whether your path involves 12-step programs, cognitive approaches, holistic methods, or something else entirely. We go beyond sobriety to focus on full self-actualization: who you want to be, not just what you want to stop doing. We're also willing to travel, we can bill insurance, and we genuinely care about the long game — not just getting you through a crisis.
Do I have to follow a specific recovery program or method?
No. We believe in honouring different recovery styles. We will work with you to understand what resonates and what hasn't worked in the past, and build a plan from there.
